BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – HBU men's basketball was unable to overcome a tough shooting night as the Huskies dropped a non-conference road decision to Samford by a score of 85-61 on Monday evening inside the Pete Hanna Center.

HBU (3-6) got a quick bucket off the tip with Oliver Lynch-Daniels dropping in a layup in the first nine seconds but Samford (10-2) answered with the next seven points. The Bulldogs built their lead to eight at the 13:44 mark after a Robert Allen dunk but the Huskies fought their way back to within one, 17-16, after an Edward Hardt layup with 10:19 on the clock.

A Jalon Gates three-pointer at the 6:20 mark pulled the Huskies within two but Samford closed the half on a 16-5 run to take a 42-29 lead into the half. The Bulldogs' Josh Sharkey took over the game for the final 8:11 of the first half, scoring 14 of his 15 points in the half in that span.

Samford opened scoring in the second half and a Myron Gordon jumper 1:19 into the half had Samford ahead by 15 but a six-point run by the Huskies cut their deficit to nine with 16:32 on the clock. The Bulldogs scored the next basket and led by double-digits the rest of the way.

Gates led the Huskies with 17 points, connecting on 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Ian DuBose led all players with a career-high 13 rebounds while posting the fourth double-double of his career with 16 points. Lynch-Daniels was 5-of-7 from the field for 12 points.

As a team, HBU out-rebounded the Bulldogs 46-41, including 20 rebounds on the offensive end. The Huskies were held to 30.8 percent (20-of-65) shooting for the game while Samford shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64). Sharkey and Brandon Austin led Samford with 24 and 22, respectively.

The Huskies will continue on to Coral Gables, Fla. for a Wednesday, Dec. 19, matchup against their second ACC opponent of the season in the Miami Hurricanes at the Watsco Center with a 7:00 p.m. Eastern time tip-off.
