WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – HBU was down by 14 with less than nine minutes to play before forcing overtime and knocking off ACC member Wake Forest, 93-91, at the LJVM Coliseum on Friday afternoon in a Black Friday class that was the Huskies' first-ever win over an ACC team.
HBU (2-2) got off to a slow start, missing its first eight shots and starting the game 1-of-13 from the floor but a five-point run midway through the first half brought the Huskies within four, 27-21, with 8:49 left on the clock after Wake Forest (3-2) got out to a 21-12 lead, its largest lead of the half. Another five-point burst by HBU thanks to a pair of layups by
Ian DuBose and
Benjamin Uloko, who converted a three-point play with the and-one, brought the score to 31-30 with just under four minutes left on the clock.
A jumper by Wake's Sharone Wright Jr. put the Demon Deacons back ahead by three but
Jalon Gates responded with his third trey of the half to even things up at 33-33. Wake Forest pushed its lead back up to six but a layup by
Stephen O'Suji off an offensive rebound just before the buzzer sent the Huskies into the half trailing 39-35.
In the second half, Wake Forest came out hot with Brandon Childress knocking down a pair of threes to give the Demon Deacons their largest lead of the game, 47-36, less than two minutes in. DuBose cut it back to single-digits on the Huskies' next possession with his first three-point of the game on HBU's next possession.
At the 14:00 mark, a three by Childress gave Wake a 13 point lead but back-to-back threes by Gates and
Jackson Stent pulled HBU back to within five, 62-57, with 10:58 remaining. From there, Wake Forest went on a nine-point run for a 71-57 advantage but HBU answered with a pair of buckets to make it 71-61 with 6:49 to go.
The Huskies continued to cut the lead, using an 11-1 run to make it 72-68 with just 3:46 left in the game. Wright made one of two free throw attempts and Torry Johnson made a pair from the charity stripe inside the two minute mark to put Wake ahead 75-68. DuBose came down the floor and knocked down a mid-range jumper with 1:28 on the clock to get the Huskies back within five.
HBU continued to get closer with a
Braxton Bonds layup making it 81-80 with 14 seconds on the clock. Childress made a pair of free throws to put Wake back up by three but DuBose had other plans, nailing a three with less than a second remaining on the clock to even it up at 83-83.
Wake Forest got a layup with 4:01 on the clock in overtime which meant that HBU held the Demon Deacons without a field goal for 9:57 of game time. Wake pushed its lead to four, 91-87, with 1:15 left and it was Gates who had the response for the Huskies, draining a three with 59 seconds on the clock and a personal foul was called on Ikenna Smart while the shot was in the air, sending
Edward Hardt to the line to shoot two but he missed both.
On the ensuing possession, Hardt forced a turnover and on the offensive end a slick pass from
Stephen O'Suji set Hardt up for a layup to put the Huskies up 92-91 with less than 24 seconds remaining. Childress missed a three for Wake on the next possession with Bonds coming up with the rebound. The senior guard made one of two free throws to put HBU ahead by two and a Childress turnover with a second left sealed the deal.
The Huskies forced Wake into 22 turnovers while committing just 10. As a team, HBU shot 44.4 percent (32-of-72) from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from beyond the arc. Gates led the Huskies with 20 points, connecting on 6-of-12 from three while DuBose added 18 and Hardt matched his career-high with 17 points.
Childress led all Wake Forest and all players with 27 points while Jaylen Hoard finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Demon Deacons. Wake shot 56.4 percent (31-of-55) for the game and were 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from deep.
"Obviously, we're proud of our guys and the fact that they fought their way back in the second half and never gave up," said head coach
Ron Cottrell. "It was an exciting game throughout. I'm really proud of our North Carolina guys that they were able to come home and get a win in front of their friends and family. It was a game wehre everybody who stepped on the floor contribute for us. I felt like we got really big contributions in so many different areas at different times of the game and certainly, any time you can beat an ACC opponent that's a big win for your program and I'm excited for our players."
"They came out in the second half really shooting the ball well. We made some defensive adjustments that I think were key to the victory. We got them out of the rhythm of what they were doing when they got the lead in the second half and that was a big part of us being able to win the ballgame."
HBU will return to Houston for a quick turnaround to the Huskies' next game when they host the UTSA Roadrunners inside Sharp Gym on Monday, Nov. 26, evening at 7:00 p.m.
