HOUSTON – On Monday evening in Sharp Gym, the HBU men's basketball team fell to visiting UTSA by a score of 86-82 with sophomore
Ian DuBose posting a double-double and freshman
Benjamin Uloko scoring a career-high 14 points.
UTSA (2-5) raced out to an early 15-6 lead after a Keaton Wallace three just over four minutes into the game and the Roadrunners pushed that lead to 10 at the 14:42 mark. A little more than two minutes later,
Jalon Gates knocked down a jumper at the 12:39 mark to bring HBU (2-3) within four. The Roadrunners responded and got back to a double-digit lead when a Byron Frohnen layup made it a 30-19 ballgame with 10 minutes to go in the half.
From there, the Huskies embarked on a 14-1 run that was capped by an
Edward Hardt layup to pull ahead 33-31 at the 5:11 mark. HBU built that lead as high as six but a 7-2 run by UTSA sent the game into the half tied 42-42.
The Huskies came out hot to start the second half, netting the first 11 points to take a 53-42 lead less than four minutes in. After a DuBose free throw with 15:10 on the clock, the Roadrunners scored seven-straight to pull within two just a minute and a half later. As the half wore on, a nine-point burst by UTSA had the visitors leading 64-59 but HBU worked its way back and the Huskies found themselves ahead 72-66 after four-consecutive points from
Oliver Lynch-Daniels.
HBU went cold after that with the Roadrunners scoring the next 12 points and leading by six with just 3:03 left. The Huskies trailed by as many as seven over the final three minutes but chipped away and got to within two after a DuBose trey with eight seconds remaining but Jhivvan Jackson made both of his free throws after HBU fouled him to ice the game.
DuBose led HBU with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists with 12 points, nine boards and five assists in the second half. Uloko was 6-of-9 off the bench and 2-of-4 at the charity stripe to score a career-best 14 points while Hardt added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Jackson Stent and
Jalon Gates both finished with eight points while
Philip McKenzie and Lynch-Daniels both had seven.
UTSA was led by the trio of Frohnen, Jackson and Keaton Wallace. Frohnen and Jackson both scored 21 while Wallace finished with 20. The Roadrunners shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the floor while HBU finished 41.8 percent (28-of-67).
