WSOC: HBU Set for Season’s Final Homestand

The Huskies host Northwestern State and Central Arkansas

HOUSTON – Riding the best start to a Southland Conference schedule in program history, the HBU women's soccer team returns to Sorrels Field for its final two home matches of the 2018 season beginning with Senior Night against Northwestern State on Friday and Central Arkansas on Sunday afternoon.
 
The final two home games of the season start with Senior Night against Northwestern State starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, with a special recognition ceremony prior to the start of the game for HBU (7-5-1, 5-0-1 SLC) seniors Baylii Bieke, Alanis Guevara, Gabby Rodriguez, Sabriah Spencer and Autumn Wildung. Combined, those five seniors have played in 311 games with more than 21,000 minutes on the field. Bieke, Rodriguez, Spencer and Wildung have combined for 43 goals and 35 assists in their time together while Guevara has become the program's all-time leader in in wins (26), shutouts (15) and saves (274).
 
As a team, HBU is in the midst of a three-game winning streak and a six-game unbeaten stretch. Coincidentally, the Huskies sit at the top of the SLC standings with 16 points, one ahead of second place Central Arkansas.
 
Northwestern State (7-7-0, 1-5-0 SLC) has out-scored opponents 33-19 for the season but a majority of the Lady Demons' scoring came in five matches out of a six-match stretch. In those five games, they held a 27-4 advantage in scoring. Senior April Trowbridge is ranked 10th nationally with 11 goals scored on the season and has totaled 27 points, tops in the league. In goal, sophomore Kayla Bomben has seen most of the minutes with a save percentage of .636 with a 1.45 goals against average.
 
On Sunday at 1:00 p.m., Central Arkansas (10-3-1, 5-1-0 SLC) comes to Sorrels Field after visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday. The Bears are enjoying their own four-game winning streak with the last three all shutouts. After facing the league's top scorer on Friday, the Huskies will face the second and third-leading scorers on Sunday in Connie Awuku-Darkoh and Camille Bassett. Awuku-Darkoh has eight goals and three assists on the year while Bassett has netted seven goals with three assists. Senior Lauren Mercuri has allowed just 12 goals over 14 appearances in goal with 13 starts for a 0.90 goals against average on the year.
 
HBU owns a 3-2-1 all-time record against Northwestern State with a 3-4-0 mark against the Bears.
 
The Huskies will close out the 2018 regular season with three-consecutive road matches. Next weekend, HBU will visit defending SLC champion Lamar on Friday, Oct. 19, and McNeese on Sunday, Oct. 21.
