MBB: HBU Comes Up Short at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The HBU men's basketball team forced SFA to commit a season-high 24 turnovers but it wasn't enough as the Huskies fell 102-82 in Southland Conference play on Wednesday night in Johnson Coliseum.
 
Freshman Ian DuBose led HBU (5-18, 1-9 SLC) with a career-high 23 points, connecting on a perfect 13-of-13 from the charity stripe while going 4-of-12 from the floor. DuBose added six rebounds, four steals, two blocked shots and two assists. Sophomore Jalon Gates added 21 for the Huskies, knocking down 6-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from three.
 
David Caraher recorded his fourth double-double of the season, ending the night with 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Braxton Bonds added nine points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Oliver Lynch-Daniels finished with eight points, matched a career-best with five assists, grabbed two steals and a pair of rebounds. As a group, HBU's underclassmen accounted for 86.5 percent of the team's points.
 
With the game staying close early, after a Caraher jumper made it 9-7 in the Lumberjacks' favor, SFA went on a nine-point run to lead 18-7 with 14:44 on the clock. The Huskies came back with a seven-point burst of their own to get back within four. After an Ivan Canete three put SFA back ahead by eight, HBU out-scored the 'Jacks 13-4 over the next two minutes and 50 seconds to lead 29-28 with 9:34 left in the half.
 
A pair of Oliver Lynch-Daniels free throws at the 7:32 mark gave the Huskies a three-point lead, their largest lead of the game. After HBU again tied the game at 39-39, the Lumberjacks clamped down on defense and closed the first half on a 12-1 run to lead 51-40 at halftime.
 
The Lumberjacks scored the first seven points of the second half go up by 18 and then pushed their lead up to 20 less than five minutes in. HBU cut its deficit to 13 after a pair of DuBose free throws with 10:23 on the clock but SFA again got back up by 19 after its next two possession. The Lumberjacks led by as many as 22 with HBU getting back to within 14 after a Gates three with 1:31 remaining.
 
SFA was led by Ty Charles who scored a career-high 31 points off the bench. Charles was 10-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-11 from three while also pulling down nine rebounds. Ivan Canete finished with 17 for the 'Jacks while TJ Holyfield added 15 and Leon Gilmore III had 13.
 
HBU forced SFA into a season-high 24 turnovers while the 'Jacks for the Huskies to commit 23 turnovers. SFA held a 39-35 advantage on the boards but the Huskies continued their season-long streak of pulling down at least 10 rebounds on the offensive end.
 
The Huskies finished the night shooting 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the floor and were 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from beyond the arc.
 
HBU will be off this Saturday and the Huskies' next game will be on Wednesday, Feb. 7, when they host Central Arkansas inside Sharp Gym at 7:00 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on Eleven Sports.
