AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Daniel Shelton and sophomore Tay Nance will both be making their second appearances at the NCAA West Preliminary Round this week at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas from Thursday, May 25, through Saturday, May 27.

Shelton will be competing in the 800 meters thanks to a qualifying time of 1:49.86. That time is a program record that Shelton achieved on April 29, 2017 at the Texas State Bobcat Classic, breaking his own previous record in the event. The junior just missed the podium at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, finishing fourth. Shelton's previous appearance at the NCAA West Prelims came during his freshman year in 2015.

Nance finished third in the triple jump at the Southland Outdoor Championships two weeks ago with a season-best mark of 12.36m/40-6.75. That distance was also the third-best mark in the conference throughout the course of the 2017 outdoor season. Last season, Nance qualified for the West Prelims as a true freshman. Nance and Shelton were the first two HBU freshmen to ever qualify for NCAA regionals, with Shelton the first in a track event and Nance the first field competitor to qualify.

The top 48 times and distances in each event qualify for regionals.

Shelton will be in action on Thursday night at 8:35 p.m., running in heat 4 of the preliminaries. The top three finishers in each prelim, plus the next six best times, will qualify for the quarterfinals being held Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. The women's triple jump will begin Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. with Nance jumping last in flight 1.

In the 800m, the top three times from each quarterfinal heat plus the next best three times will advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. From June 7-10. In the triple jump, the top 12 finishers will advance to the Outdoor Championships.
