LAWRENCE, Kansas – HBU freshman triple jumper
Tay Nance made school history on Thursday when she qualified for the NCAA West Regionals May 26-28 from Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas.
Nance, a native of Cleveland, Texas, and a graduate of Conroe High School, becomes the first freshman field event competitor to qualify for the NCAAs in school history. Distance runner
Daniel Shelton was the first overall freshman when he qualified last season. Overall, this marks the eighth qualification for the program.
Nance reaches the big stage after a stellar performance at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on May 7 in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she broke her own school record on three separate occasions, eventually leaping to 12.44m/40-9.75 on her final attempt. That mark originally ranked her 40th nationally. She comes into the NCAA West 47th. The Top 48 in each event qualify for the NCAAs.
Nance joins Sam Houston State's Tristyn Allen as the only Southland representatives in the event. Nance will compete in the first of four heats in the event.
Due to tumultuous weather in the area on Thursday and it is expected to be similar weather the remainder of the regionals, the women's triple jump will now take place at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday instead of the original 6:30 p.m. start.
Nance will have a busy summer ahead as she has also qualified for the 2016 USA Junior Nationals held June 24-26 in Clovis, California.
