PORTLAND, Ore. – Five members of the HBU track and field teams will be looking to move up the NCAA West Regional rankings and for a chance to compete in next week's NCAA Regionals in Kansas when the Huskies compete in the Portland Twilight on Sunday from Griswold Stadium.
The top 48 in NCAA West in running and field events and the top 24 nationally in the decathlon and heptathlon earn a spot to the NCAA West Regionals, held May 26-28 from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
Sophomore
Daniel Shelton is the highest-ranking Husky, as he is 75th in NCAA West in the 800m. He will be going up against 43 other competitors spread across five heats. Competing in heat two, Shelton will be facing against fellow Southland Conference foe Olandis Johnson of McNeese State.
In the women's 800m, junior
Kierstin Santana is ranked 80th in the NCAA. In another busy event, Santana will be competing in a very difficult heat two of four, competing against former collegiate national champion and Haiti national Junia Limage. Santana joins Portland's Lorea Ibarzabal as the only two collegiates in the 10-runner heat.
Senior
Lakesha Cameron will be competing in two events, the 100m and 200m. She is ranked 78th in the NCAA in the 100, where she will be competing against four participants from Portland, one from Western Oregon, and one from Simon Fraser. In the 200, Cameron will toe the line against two sprinters from Portland, two from Simon Fraser, and one from Western Oregon.
Two Huskies will be competing in field events in junior
Taylor Thomas and senior
Garrison Fick.
Thomas will look to rebound after last weekend's conference championships in the long jump. She is ranked 92nd in NCAA West and will compete against three competitors from Simon Fraser and one from Universal Athletics.
Despite not being ranked in the high jump, Fick is currently 49th nationally in the decathlon after his record-setting performance last weekend. He will be competing against two competitors from George Fox and one from Bowerman TC.
The first event begins with the triple jump at 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students with ID. Children and seniors are admitted free.
