NORTHRIDGE, California – CSUN received an outstanding start from Kenny Rosenberg in game one, then used a six-run first inning to hold off HBU in game two as the Matadors swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Matador Field, 7-1 and 6-3.
Junior rightfielder
Brandon Brintz hit his first career home run in the first game for the Huskies (10-9). Junior lefthander
Christian Thames (0-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings, while junior
Weston Wick gave up a pair over the final three innings.
Rosenberg (3-0) allowed one run on two hits with 11 strikeouts over seven innings for the Matadors (17-3) in game one.
Justin Toerner led CSUN offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs, while Fred Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and also scored twice. Bobby Scuman, Nolan Bumstead and Branden Berry each drove in a pair of runs for the Matadors.
In the second game, HBU junior righthander
Julian Griego (3-1) allowed six runs in the first inning, but held CSUN scoreless for the next six innings.
Senior third baseman
Justin Monsour went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Huskies, while senior second baseman
Greg Espinosa went 2-for-4 and walked. Junior centerfielder
Joe Van Marter added an RBI double.
Jose Ruiz went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Yusuke Akitoshi went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run for the Matadors. Berry went 2-for-3 with a run and Bumstead went 2-for-4.
Joey Deceglie (2-0) picked up the win for CSUN, allowing one unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk in three innings of relief of starter Rayne Raven, who allowed two runs on five hits in three innings. Conner O'Neil worked the final 2.1 innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
