Game NotesHUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU women's basketball looks to embark their first season sweep of Sam Houston State in program history when the two teams meet Saturday at 2 p.m. from SHSU's Johnson Coliseum.
HBU leads the all-time series, 6-4, and defeated the Bearkats, 67-63, last month in Sharp Gym behind team highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds from
Anna Strickland. HBU currently sits in sixth place in the conference standings while the Bearkats are ninth. The top eight eligible teams earn a trip to Katy for the conference tournament next month.
HBU (11-11 overall, 6-6 SLC) had huge performances from Strickland,
Lisa Zderadicka, and
Meghan Shank in the Huskies' 77-66 win over Lamar, the second victory over the Cardinals in the all-time series and the first in Sharp Gym. Strickland nearly posted a triple-double, as she had a game-high 16 rebounds and career-bests 27 points and nine assists. Zderadicka scored 18 points and Shank came off the bench for 12.
Heidi Sihvola continued her hot stretch with five points, six assists, and two steals. On the season, Strickland is T-3rd nationally in both rebounding (13.4) and double-doubles (17). She is 13th in scoring (13.8), fifth in field-goal percentage (46.2), T-2nd in blocks (1.7), T-7th in assists (3.1), and seventh in steals (2.0) in the conference. As a team, the Huskies are fifth in scoring offense (65.1) and sixth in scoring defense (63.7).
Sam Houston State (8-14, 4-8) is on a three-game losing streak following a 67-55 defeat at conference leader Abilene Christian on Wednesday. Shernise Robertson leads the SLC and is 49th nationally with 18.1 points per game. She also leads the team with 68 assists and her 36 steals are second behind Kamry Orr's 47. Angela Beadle follows with 14.6 points per contest and leads the team in rebounding (9.9) and blocks (44). She leads the conference in blocks and field-goal percentage (53.0) and is second in rebounding behind Strickland. As a team, the Bearkats are T-10th in the conference in scoring offense (61.5) and 10th in scoring defense (68.1).
After Saturday's contest, HBU is off until a Thursday matchup against Incarnate Word in San Antonio at 6 p.m.
