Baseball Falls to Nicholls in Finale

Colonels sweep three-game Southland Conference series.



THIBODAUX, Louisiana – Nicholls score four runs in the second inning and went on to a 7-2 victory over HBU in the finale to sweep the three-game Southland Conference series Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.
 
Senior catcher Samm Wiggins went 3-for-4 with a run for the Huskies (22-23, 12-12 SLC). Junior shortstop Louie Payetta was 2-for-4 with a run, and junior second baseman Greg Espinosa was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Justin Holt was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while David Zorn was 3-for-4 with two runs for the Colonels (28-16-1, 14-10). Kyle Reese was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Joey Morales was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Justin Sinibaldi (9-1) picked up the win for the Colonels, allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Marc Frazier tossed three perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts for Nicholls.
 
Senior Curtis Jones (4-6) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in one and two-thirds innings. Senior Ross Kennell hurled five and one-third innings out of the bullpen, allowing an unearned run on seven hits.
 
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the first with three-straight two-out singles by Payetta, Wiggins and Espinosa. The Colonels answered in the bottom half as Holt led off with a single. With two outs, two-straight wild pitches put Holt on third, then Vandevere blooped a single to center to tie the game.
 
Nicholls rallied for four runs in the second, which included a two-run double by Reese, to take a 5-1 lead.
 
HBU's run in the fourth came in the fourth when Wiggins and Espinosa singled, then Wiggins came home on a base hit by junior third baseman Andrew Alvarez.
