Golf's Montgomerie Wins Senior PGA Championship

Colin Montgomerie wins Senior PGA Championship for second straight year.

FRENCH LICK, Ind. – Former HBU standout golfer Colin Montgomerie carded a three-under 69 in his final round on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort to win the 76th Senior PGA Championship by four strokes over the weekend.

Montgomerie, a HBU letterwinner from 1983-87, became the first player to win back-to-back Senior PGA titles since Hale Irwin, who won three straight, in 1998 with his defense of last year's win at Harbor Shores in Michigan. The native of Glasgow, Scotland, finished eight-under par for the week at 280, turning in rounds of 72, 69, 70 and 69 over 72 holes, as he was one of just five players to finish under par.

The win is Montgomerie's third on the senior tour in 10 appearances, with all three coming in his past six outings.

Montgomerie graduated from HBU in 1987 after leading the Huskies to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1985-87, earning Trans America Athletic All-Conference honors all three years and TAAC Player of the Year in 1985. An All-America selection honors in 1986 and 1987, Montgomerie was a member of the first HBU Sports Hall of Honor class in 1997. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.
