BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU held on for a 3-2 victory over Lamar Sunday in a game that was suspended Friday night due to a rain delay in the top of the ninth.
Senior catcher Samm Wiggins was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while junior first baseman Andrew Alvarez was 3-for-4 with a run. Senior centerfielder Zach Nehrir was 3-for-5, adding an infield single on Sunday.
Junior lefthander Matthew McCollough (7-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in eight innings. Junior Dylan Zarosky picked up his second save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Jake Nash went 2-for-4, while Stijn van der Meer and CJ Moore had RBIs for the Cardinals.
Derek Wade (0-1) took the loss for Lamar, giving up a run on three hits with three strikeouts in two and one-third innings. Starter Chase Angelle allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in six innings for the no-decision.
Lamar led 1-0 after the first inning on an RBI triple by Moore, then took a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Stijn van der Meer.
HBU finally broke through in the sixth on a solo home run by Wiggins, his fourth of the season. The Huskies scored two more in the seventh, with Wiggins also driving in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to left.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
