ResultsHOUSTON --
Shawn O'Brien broke the school record in the men's javelin on Friday and
Kierstin Santana finished as the top collegian in the women's 800 Saturday to highlight HBU performances at the rain-shortened 64th TSU Relays. Meet organizers stopped the meet on Saturday midway through the schedule due to torrential rains that made conditions at Durley Field treacherous.
O'Brien added more than seven feet to his lifetime-best with a throw of 48.05m/157-8 and placed sixth overall as he took down the previous Huskies' record of 46.74m/153-4, set by Jarrett Gilliam in 2009. It was the oldest men's record on the books since the program was restarted in 2008.
Santana, who won silver in the 800 at the Southland Conference indoor championships last month, clocked 2:16.22 to finish second overall and was the top collegiate finisher as the event was won by Anne Jones of the adidas Rogue Athletic Club.
Other top results included a third-place finish in the women's long jump Friday by SLC indoor champ
Taylor Thomas, who spanned 5.55m/18-2.5, and
Chinnoya Adiukwu, who used a lifetime-best throw of 33.25m/109-1 to take fifth in the women's javelin.
Briana O'Brien was eighth in the discus with a throw of 37.51m/123-1 in her first outdoor meet as a Husky.
In Friday's running events,
Jaivairia Bacote was eighth in the women's 400m hurdles at 64.02, and
Christian Guzman matched that placing in the men's race with his 54.89. Guzman also qualified for the final of the 110H with a 15.08, the seventh-fastest time of the day.
Freshman
Tambrisha Banks had an impressive season-opener in the 200 before the rains came Saturday, taking fourth overall with her 24.99, with
Imani Carr seventh in a personal-best 25.36.
The Huskies travel to Austin March 26-28 for the Texas Relays.
