Live AudioTournament CentralTournament NotesBIRMINGHAM, Ala. – HBU softball is back on the road to compete in their final regular season tournament of the season. The Huskies will join Alabama State and Valparaiso to compete in the Samford Tournament Feb. 20-22.
HBU opens the tournament with two games on Friday: Valparaiso at 11 am and Alabama State at 5:45 pm. The Huskies take on Samford Saturday at 1:30 pm, then close the tournament with another matchup with ASU Sunday at 11 am. HBU (3-7) went 3-1 at the Lion Classic II hosted by Southeastern Louisiana Feb. 13-15.
Cecilia Bauer hit .750 (6-for-8) in the tournament, with a double, a triple, an RBI, and seven runs scored.
Melissa Herman went 6-for-9 (.667) with a double, four RBIs, and six runs scored.
Laci Belovsky went 2-0 in the circle as she struck out 10 in three appearances.
On the season, Herman leads the team with a .391 batting average (9-for-23) with a double, a home run, five RBIs, and 10 runs scored.
Libby Brown is hitting .333 (10-for-30) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, seven runs scored, and a team-best nine RBIs. Belovsky leads the pitching staff with 26 strikeouts, seven appearances, and a 4.42 ERA.
Valparaiso went 2-3 in the season-opening Mercer Invitational, defeating IPFW both times (10-2 and 9-1). Taylor Lawson leads the Crusaders with a .500 batting average (10-for-20) with a double, two RBIs, and five runs scored. Three Crusaders have a team-best four RBIs. Ashlyn Montgomery leads the trio of pitchers with a 4.34 ERA, as she is 1-0 with three appearances and one start. She has walked two and struck out eight. Taylor Weissenhoffer has struck out a staff-best 10 batters.
Alabama State (3-6) went 2-2 at the ULM Tournament, defeating Southeast Missouri State both times and falling to the host Warhawks twice. Brittney Wilson leads the Hornets with a .500 average (9-for-18) with two home runs, four RBIs, and eight runs scored. Carly Evans leads the team with 13 RBIs. In the circle, Maddie Phelps has a staff-best 5.15 ERA, as she is 2-2 with six appearances and four starts. She has five strikeouts.
Samford (8-2) is on a four-game winning streak after going perfect in its own tournament last weekend. One of the Bulldogs' losses this season was home to national power, Alabama, 7-1, Feb. 11. Megan Dowdy leads Samford with a .459 average (17-for-37). Caitlin Bice has a .423 average (11-for-26) and leads the team with four home runs, 13 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. Grey Adams is 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA and nine strikeouts in the circle. Mollie Hanson (2.80 ERA) leads the team with 16 K's.
