Buy Photos NowHOUSTON – Holding a seven-point lead after the first quarter, HBU outscored visiting Paul Quinn, 67-21, over the final three quarters – including a 40-11 difference in the second half – to defeat the Lady Tigers, 95-42, Friday evening from Sharp Gym.
HBU (1-2) was paced by senior guard
Rachel Arthur, who scored a game-high 21 points – four shy of her career high – on 9-of-12 shooting and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Her five rebounds were one shy of her personal mark. Senior forward
Anna Strickland posted the second double-double in as many games, with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, 13 on the defensive end. She also registered four blocks to improve her team high to nine. As a team, the Huskies shot a season-high 60 percent (38-for-63) from the floor.
Both Jada Peltier and Levett Jiles led Paul Quinn (1-2) with 13 points, while Shecarrie Silas was the top rebounder with six boards. As a team, the Lady Tigers shot 20 percent (11-for-55) from the floor.
PQ battled hard in the first quarter, coming within one point twice, with three pointers by Jiles and Peltier. HBU led by as many as nine in the quarter before the Lady Tigers closed the quarter with four unanswered to come within five, 26-21. A pair of Strickland free throws gave HBU a seven-point advantage entering the second quarter. Eleven of Peltier's 13 points came in the first quarter.
HBU began the second quarter on a 9-1 run to increase its lead to 13, 35-22, as
Meghan Shank had an offensive rebound which led to a Strickland layup. The Lady Tigers came within nine, but HBU closed the half 16-3 stretch to lead 53-31 at the break. With two-and-a-half to go,
Kennedy Collins posted her first-collegiate block and later scored a jumper.
Strickland led all scorers with 16 points, while Peltier had all 13 of her points in the first 20 minutes. HBU shot 67 percent from the floor compared to 25 percent for PQ.
HBU used a dominant third quarter to pull away, as the Huskies outscored the Lady Tigers, 17-2, forced nine Lady Tiger turnovers, and held PQ to just seven percent shooting (1-for-14).
Adriiana Jackson had back-to-back midcourt steals to begin the fourth quarter, the second resulting in an and-one to give HBU a 77-37 lead.
Brooklyn Moore – seeing her first collegiate action – and
Veronika Kirienko each scored their first collegiate points in the quarter.
Jackson had a half-high 12 points to lead HBU, while Jiles and Taylor Izatt each had three for PQ. HBU shot 55 percent from the floor in the half compared to 15 percent for the Lady Tigers.
HBU will compete in the UTSA Thanksgiving Tournament, held Nov. 27-29. The Huskies take on Nebraska Omaha on the 27th and the host Roadrunners on the 29th, both games set for 2 p.m. starts.
