The series is knotted at 1-1, with the road team winning each time last season. HBU won the first meeting, 66-61, Jan. 16 in Thibodaux, while Nicholls was victorious in Sharp Gym, 73-69, Mar. 6.
HBU (6-7 overall, 0-2 SLC) led host McNeese State for all of 43 seconds, but the Cowgirls came out with the victory, 60-57, Monday night.
Meghan Shank's three-pointer with 10 seconds to go gave the Huskies a chance, down one, but SLC Player of the Week, Jayln Johnson, hit both free throws, and the Huskies' three-pointer attempts didn't fall.
Shanice Steenholdt was one of three Huskies in double-figures, with game highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Rachel Arthur had 14 points, while Shank chipped in with 12. HBU had 10 blocks, with
Anna Strickland registering a career-high six and Steenholdt with four.
On the season, Steenholdt continues to lead the conference with 18.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. Strickland's 1.9 blocks per game rank second in the conference, while
Tayler Jefferson's 4.2 assists per game are good for third in the SLC. HBU leads the conference in team blocks, averaging 5.23 per game.
Nicholls (4-8 overall, 0-1 SLC) dropped its conference opener, 67-62, at Lamar Saturday. The Colonels have only won once in the last six games. Jenny Nash led Nicholls with 15 points, while Tia Charles added 11. Nash and Hope Pawlowski each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
On the season, Emani White leads the squad with 15.3 points per game. Nash follows with 13.5 points and leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per contest, 13 blocks, 30 three-pointers made, 32 assists, and 23 steals.
Southeastern Louisiana won the first meeting between the two teams in thrilling fashion last season, an 84-83 double overtime win in Sharp Gym Jan. 25.
This season, the Lady Lions (4-8 overall, 0-1 SLC) have also lost five of their last six, following a 78-71 road loss to Stephen F. Austin Jan. 5. Southeastern Louisiana hosts Sam Houston State Thursday prior to facing the Huskies Saturday.
Symone Miller and Nanna Pool are neck and neck in points, with Miller leading the squad with 13.7 points per game and Pool following with 13.1. Pool is second in the conference – behind Steenholdt – with 10.3 rebounds per contest. Elizabeth Styles leads the conference with 5.9 assists per game.
Following the games in Louisiana, HBU begins a four-game home stand Thursday, Jan. 15 against Central Arkansas. Tip-off is set for a 7 pm start at Sharp Gym.
