Jaivairia Bacote broke the HBU record in the women's pentathlon and
Juan Fraga anchored the Huskies' distance medley relay to silver Friday on the first day of the Howie Ryan Invitational at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Bacote finished seventh overall with her score of 3,103 points, adding 99 to the previous record set by
Desiree Scott in 2013. She got off to a strong start in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.04, and added a personal best in the shot put before clocking 2:29.11 for third in the 800 to round out the five-eventer.
Teaming up with
Jeremy Lewis (1200m),
Jarell McFarland (400m) and freshman
Daniel Shelton (800m), Fraga split 4:21.9 on his anchor 1600m leg to stop the clock at 10:18.72 and give the Huskies a second-place finish.
The day's other finals saw the women's distance medley relay place sixth at 12:42.54 with a quartet of
Katie Haring,
Roneisha Webb,
Kierstin Santana and
Carolyn McClanahan, and
Brice Christian take tenth in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.75m/22-1.75.
In the men's 60 hurdles prelims,
Christian Guzman missed the school record by .01 seconds with an 8.34 clocking that advanced him to Saturday's semifinals.
Lakesha Cameron,
Tambrisha Banks and
Imani Carr all advanced to the semis of the women's 60, and season bests went to
Ericka Rodriguez (58.07) and
Gbemisola Orundami (58.15) in the women's 400. Banks raced to a lifetime best 25.20 to take second overall in the "B" sections of the 200.
After the first day of the men's heptathlon,
Garrison Fick was sixth in the standings with 2,690 points, 109 ahead of the pace that saw him set a school record at the 2014 Southland Conference indoor championships. Fick had personal bests in the 60 and the shot put.
Jordan Claypool, competing in his first-ever multievent, notched a PR in the shot put before a no-height in the high jump dropped him in the points table. The event concludes Saturday with the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.
Competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the women's long jump and shot put.
