HOUSTON –Texas Southern scored a pair of runs in the first, then another pair in the sixth to take a 4-2 victory over HBU in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Four separate Huskies had hits, which were all singles. Senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy singled and scored a run, while junior catcher
Samm Wiggins also scored for HBU (20-21).
Zach Welz went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles with an RBI and a run for TSU (22-25). Chris Lopez went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Chris DeLeon was 2-for-4 for the Tigers.
Jamell Blue (1-1) earned the win for TSU, holding HBU without a hit and walking a pair in three innings of relief. Tigers starter Frank Cruz allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in four innings, while Felix Gomez worked a perfect ninth for his third save.
Junior
Ross Kennell (2-4) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings.
TSU jumped out to an early lead when Gordaya led off the first with an infield single and Howell reached on an error and both runners moved into scoring position. Ford grounded out to plate the first run of the game, then Welz followed with an RBI single to put the Tigers ahead, 2-0.
HBU tied the game with a pair in the fourth. Wiggins led off with a walk and McCoy followed with a single to left, then both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Nehrir. Wiggins scored when Cruz attempted to pickoff McCoy at second, but the throw sailed into centerfield. Martinez came through with a single to left and an error by the leftfielder allowed McCoy to come home and even the score, 2-2.
Welz reached on an error to lead off the sixth, then Robert Garza and Luis Armas singled to load the bases. Andrew Garza lifted a sacrifice fly to right, then Lopez delivered an RBI single to leftcenter to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face Lamar in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday in Beaumont, Texas.
