Box Score

HOUSTON – HBU staked Curtis Jones to a six-run lead, and the junior righthander turned in another strong effort as the Huskies dropped Abilene Christian, 6-3, to claim the Southland Conference series finale Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.

Jones (3-3) allowed three runs on eight hits, struck out a career-high eight and walked one in 7.1 innings. He held the Wildcats scoreless through seven innings, running the Huskies' shutout streak in the series to 18 innings, before ACU got to him in the eighth. Senior Kobie Hadjik finished off the eighth, then sophomore Dylan Zarosky pitched a perfect ninth to earn saves in back-to-back games. Zarosky has a team-leading five saves for the season, tying him for fifth on HBU's single-season saves list and tying for ninth on the HBU career saves list.

Senior first baseman Bradley Brown went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while junior catcher Samm Wiggins went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for the Huskies (20-20, 9-12 SLC). Junior second baseman Clayton Vaughn was 2-for-2 with a walk, was hit by a pitch and scored a run, Jones went 2-for-5 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, and junior rightfielder Thomas Clay drove in a pair. Senior leftfielder Jordan McCoy tripled, drove in a run and scored one.

Seth Spivey went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Wildcats (15-25, 5-10), while Aaron Draper doubled and scored a run.

Garrett deMeyere (4-5) allowed three runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings to take the loss for ACU, while Nick Palacios made his third-straight appearance for the Wildcats and gave up three runs on two hits in an inning of work.

The Huskies got on the board first with a run in the third. Brown and Vaughn led off with singles and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Clay. Senior shortstop CJ Jarvis then lifted a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead. Jarvis later singled in the game to run his hitting streak to 10 games.

HBU added a pair in the fourth as Wiggins and McCoy led off with back-to-back triples, then junior centerfielder Zach Nehrir's sacrifice fly to center gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Brown smacked a one-out single up the middle, Vaughn was hit by a pitch, and a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position. Clay followed with a two-run single to center, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Jones to put HBU ahead, 6-0.

Draper led off the eighth with a double off the wall, then Buhner singled to right to put runners on the corners. After Connor Messman fouled out to third, Spivey blasted a three-run home run to right to cut the Huskies' lead in half. Taylor Waters drew a walk, but Tyler Eager lined out to third and Waters was doubled off at first to end the threat.

The Huskies wrap up the five-game homestand against Texas Southern Tuesday at 3 p.m., before hitting the road to face Lamar in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday in Beaumont, Texas.
