Ross Kennell and the Huskies' pitching staff, which held UTSA to five hits, in a 5-2 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Kennell (2-3) held UTSA hitless through four innings, but left it in the hands of the bullpen after allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Juniors
Chris Garza and
Josh Martinez each pitched a scoreless inning, then sophomore
Dylan Zarosky recorded his third save of the year, striking out a pair in the ninth.
Senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy extended his hitting streak to 15 games by singling his first three times up and ran his streak of reaching safely to 12 at-bats, but he struck out in his final plate appearance, falling two at-bats shy of the NCAA record. Junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir also went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base for the Huskies (18-19). Junior rightfielder
Thomas Clay went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while junior third baseman
Curtis Jones was 2-for-4 and walked. Senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis singled and drove in a pair.
Five separate players had hits for UTSA, with John Bormann's double being the only one for extra bases. Bormann and Tony Ramirez each scored a run, while C.J. Pickering recorded the Roadrunners' only RBI.
Boone Mokry (1-2) took the loss for UTSA (26-15), allowing four runs on five hits in two innings, and Michael Craft allowed a run on three hits without recording an out, but Wesley Cox, Jeremy Filipek and Matt Sims combined to shut the Huskies out on five hits over the final six innings.
McCoy and Nehrir had back-to-back singles to lead off the second, but McCoy was forced out at third on Martinez's sacrifice bunt attempt. Senior first baseman
Mike Chamberlain drew a walk after an 11-pitch at-bat to load the bases, but sophomore designated hitter
Nathan Schwertner struck out for the second out. Clay then delivered a two-run double to right, and Jarvis followed with a two-run single to rightcenter to give HBU a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies added a run in the third when Wiggins, McCoy and Nehrir strung together consecutive singles to lead off the inning to go up 5-0.
Ramirez drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, then Bormann followed with a double down the leftfield line. Ramirez scored on an error when the throw back to the infield skipped away, then Pickering lifted a sacrifice fly to left to cut HBU's lead to 5-2.
HBU returns to action when it hosts Abilene Christian in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
