PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – HBU senior outfielder
Jordan McCoy had a career day, going 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs, but the Huskies faltered late in a 9-8 loss to Prairie View A&M Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball at John Tankersley Field.
McCoy's blasts were the first two of his career at HBU. Junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Huskies (14-11), junior catcher
Samm Wiggins was 1-for-2 and scored twice, while junior second baseman
Josh Martinez tripled and scored to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Dominic Harris went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Cody Den Beste went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for the Panthers (10-12). Robert Cossey was 2-for-4 with two runs, and Grant Dougherty went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Greg Salcido doubled twice for PVAM.
Michael Dewey (2-0) earned the win for PVAM, allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings of relief of starter Pedro Maldonado, who gave up three runs on six hits in four innings. Sophomore
Matt Harding (2-1) took the loss for HBU, allowing two runs on two hits in an inning. Sophomore starter
Matthew McCollough gave up five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
HBU jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the first and another three-spot in the fifth, but Prairie View got a three-run shot from Harris in the bottom of the fifth as part of a five-run inning to cut the Huskies' lead to one. After the Panthers tied it at 6-6, Den Beste hit a three-run homer to right to put PVAM up 9-6.
In the top of the ninth, McCoy hit a two-out solo home run to left, senior designated hitter
Bradley Brown was hit by a pitch and pinch runner
Clayton Vaughn scored on Nehrir's doubled to the leftfield gap, but Nehrir was stranded at second representing the tying run to end the game.
The Huskies return to action when they travel to face McNeese State in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday in Lake Charles, La.
