EL PASO, Texas – Junior
Michaela Granchelli homered and tripled on the day, but HBU lost to New Mexico State, 5-3, and UTEP, 10-5, to conclude the UTEP Invitational Saturday.
Against NMSU,
Lauren Schwirtlich went 2-for-4, while
Melissa Herman,
Cecilia Bauer, and M. Granchelli each had an RBI.
Emily Mueller (3-3) took the loss in the complete-game effort, as she allowed six hits, five runs, and two walks.
Fiana Finau went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Aggies. Karysta Donisthorpe earned the complete-game win in the circle, as she gave up five hits, three runs, and two walks with eight strikeouts.
HBU took a 3-1 lead through three innings with a Herman sac bunt in the top of the first, a lead-off homer by M. Granchelli in the second, and an RBI double by Bauer in the third.
NMSU tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Alyssa Ruiz hit an RBI double, followed by an RBI triple by Brennalyn Nakamura.
Finau untied the game with a two-run home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the sixth to give the Aggies a 5-3 lead. HBU went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
In the second game of the day, UTEP took a 2-0 lead after two innings, before HBU used a three-run top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. After a lead-off homer by Herman, Bauer was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI triple by M. Granchelli. Granchelli scored on an RBI single by
Daniella Rodarte.
The Huskies added another run in the top of the fifth, as
Alyssa Burnett hit an RBI single to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.
The Miners erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, thanks in part to a two-run double by Colleen Hohman.
UTEP added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Hohman. The Huskies got one of the runs back in the top of the seventh on a solo shot by Bauer.
Six different Huskies had one hit, while five different players had an RBI. Bauer had two runs scored.
Kendall Stiefel (1-4) started in the circle and took the loss, as she allowed 11 hits, seven runs (five earned), and one walk in 4.1 innings.
Shannon O'Connor pitched the final 1.2 and gave up four hits and three runs (two earned).
Hohman and Erika Arcuri were the big hitters for UTEP, as Hohman went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored and Arcuri went 4-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
The Miners used four pitchers, as Hohman started and got the no-decision. Kaitlin Fifield (1-2) earned the win as she allowed one hit, one run, and one strikeout in 1.0 inning.
HBU (4-10) returns home to play Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Husky Field. First game is scheduled for a 2 pm start.
