HOUSTON –
Victoria Granchelli had three hits in a Southland Conference-opening twinbill with Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at Husky Field in the Huskies' 3-0 and 4-0 losses to the Lady Demons.
Granchelli went 2-for-5 in the series for HBU (4-12 overall, 0-2 SLC).
Shay Orsak had two hits, both coming in the second game.
Brittney Jones hit two home runs, one in each game, for Northwestern State (10-9 overall, 2-0 SLC). As a team, the Lady Demons hit three homers on the day.
In game one, HBU starter
Kendall Stiefel pitched well, as she only allowed five hits, but two pitches resulted in all three runs, as Kay Boening hit a solo shot in the top of the third and Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.
HBU was held to just two hits, as
Kirsten Schwirtlich and V. Granchelli each went 1-for-3. Stiefel (1-5) struck out five and walked one batter in the complete-game effort.
Five different Lady Demons had one hit, while Jones led with the two RBI. Shelby Sells (3-3) earned the complete-game win as she allowed two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four.
In game two, NSU took a 1-0 lead after the first inning on an RBI single by Brittany Virgoe. The Lady Demons added two more in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Tara McKenney hit an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw home. The very next batter, Cali Burke, singled up the middle which scored McKenney.
The Lady Demons increased their lead to 4-0 with a solo homer by Jones in the top of the fifth.
V. Granchelli went 2-for-2 for the Huskies, while Orsak went 2-for-3.
Shannon O'Connor (0-4) started in the circle and took the loss, as she allowed 10 hits, four runs (three earned), and one walk.
Emily Mueller pitched the final 2.2 innings and gave up one hit and four walks with one strikeout.
Jones went 3-for-4 for NSU, while Virgoe, Burke, and Kellye Kincannon each had two hits. Kaylee Guidry (3-2) earned the win, as she allowed six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
HBU and NSU conclude the series Sunday at 2 pm.
