Women’s Basketball Hosts TAMUCC in Crucial Game

Huskies and Islanders are tied for final playoff spot as two teams play home-and-home series

HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team begins a home-and-home series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with playoff implications on the line. The series begins with a 3 pm tip Saturday at Sharp Gym.

HBU and TAMUCC will meet again next Saturday, March 1, in Corpus Christi at 12 pm.

With four games remaining in the regular season, HBU and TAMUCC find themselves tied for the eighth and final playoff spot for the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Islanders lead the all-time series, 2-0, and won the last meeting in Houston back in 2011-12.

In its last game, HBU (11-14 overall, 7-7 SLC) was held to just 22 percent shooting and 23 points in the second half against conference-leader Central Arkansas in a 57-55 loss to the Sugar Bears last Saturday.

Monet Neal led the Huskies with 11 points, while Rachel Arthur scored nine. Shanice Steenholdt had eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Steenholdt leads the conference in conference scoring, with 18.1 points per game and is fifth with 9.9 rebounds per game in the conference. She averages 17.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game on the season, as she also leads the team with 43 blocks and 43 steals. Arthur is next with 11.3 points per game, followed by Erin McGarrachan with 9.6. Tayler Jefferson averages 7.6 points per game and leads the team with 97 assists.

The hottest team in the conference at winners of four straight, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-11 overall, 7-7 SLC) won home games against Central Arkansas, 45-42, and Oral Roberts, 61-53, last weekend.

Brittany Mbamalu led TAMUCC with 18 points, while Jasmine Shaw recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds against ORU.

On the season, Shaw leads the team with 16.2 points and is second with 5.3 rebounds per game. Ashley Darley averages 5.5 boards per game.
