Baseball Takes on Northeastern in Battle of Huskies

HBU has won its first four games of the season heading into a three-game weekend series.

HBU hosts Northeastern in a three-game series Friday and Saturday at Husky Field.

HOUSTON – HBU, winners of its first four games, will host Northeastern in a three-game non-conference baseball series Friday and Saturday at Husky Field. Friday's single game begins at 2 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
 
Junior second baseman Josh Martinez leads the Huskies (4-0) with a .412 batting average, a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Junior third baseman Curtis Jones is hitting .381, is tied for the team lead with five runs, and has a 12-game hitting streak dating back to last season. Junior centerfielder Zach Nehrir has hit .368 with a double, is tied with Jones with five runs and four RBIs in his first four games as a Husky.
 
The Huskies will send senior righthander Ryan Lower, junior righthander Taylor Wright and either junior righthander Ross Kennell or junior righthander Curtis Jones to the mound for the series. Lower and Wright each won their first starts of the year, while Kennell and Jones each received no-decisions in eventual HBU victories.
 
HBU swept a three-game series over Prairie View A&M last weekend at home, then outlasted UTSA in 13 innings Tuesday in San Antonio. Senior first baseman Mike Chamberlain lifted the Huskies to the 9-7 win with a two-run home run, the first of his HBU career, in the top of the 13th.
 
Sean Lyons leads Northeastern (0-3) with a .385 batting average. Josh Treff has the Huskies' only extra-base hit with a double and leads the team with two RBIs.
 
Northeastern will send righthander Nick Berger, lefthander James Mulry and Chris Carmain. Berger has a 14.73 ERA, Mulry is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA, and Carmain took a no-decision in his first start despite tossing seven shutout innings.
 
Northeastern was swept by Texas A&M last weekend in College Station.
