HOUSTON – HBU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first and rolled to a 12-5 victory over Prairie View A&M in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

Josh Martinez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. Junior third baseman
Curtis Jones went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs, while junior designated hitter
Thomas Clay went 3-for-6 with a triple, an RBI and two runs. Junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and senior first baseman
Bradley Brown also had a double. Junior catcher
Samm Wiggins had a hit, walked three times and drove in a pair for the Huskies (2-0).

Taylor Wright (1-0) earned the win in his HBU debut, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven in five innings. Sophomore
Matt Harding allowed a run on one hit in three innings, and sophomore
Chad Valcoviak finished off the victory by working a scoreless ninth.
Robert Cossey went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run for PVAM (0-2). Greg Salcidohomered and drove in two runs.
A.J. Helms (0-1) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits in 3.1 innings for the Panthers.
Salcido gave the Panthers the lead with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first, but the Huskies answered back by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Nehrir got HBU on the board with a bases-loaded, two-run single to right center, the Martinez added an RBI single. Saenz delivered a two-runs single, and Clay had an RBI single to center in his second at-bat of the inning.
In the fourth, Nehrir beat out a bases-loaded chopper down the third baseline for an RBI, then Wiggins added a two-run single to stake the Huskies to a 10-1 lead.
The Panthers responded with three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Cossey, Grant Dougherty scored on a wild pitch, and Salcido had a sacrifice fly.
Clay led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis, then Brown led of the eight with a double and scored on Martinez's RBI single to cap the scoring for HBU.
The series concludes Sunday with a 2 p.m. start time at Husky Field.
