HOUSTON – Senior righthander
Ryan Lower went six innings, while sophomore
Chris Garza took care of the final three as HBU downed Prairie View A&M, 6-2, in the season opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
Lower (1-0) allowed five hits, two runs, only one earned and struck out three without a walk to pick of the victory for the Huskies (1-0). Garza tossed three perfect innings, throwing 20-of-29 pitches for strikes, to earn a save in his HBU debut.
Junior third baseman
Curtis Jones went 2-for-4 with a walk, and drove in three runs, while junior second baseman
Josh Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Sophomore righfielder
Austin Saenz singled and scored twice for HBU.
Cody Den Beste went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and Robert Cossey went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Panthers (0-1).
Jonathan Mata (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out five and walking four in six innings.
HBU got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis led off with a hard infield single off the shortstop, advanced to second on a groundout, third on a failed pick off attempt, then scored on a groundout by senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy.
PVAM tied it when Dan Beste led off the second with a homer to right. The Panthers took the lead in the third when Cossey led off with a single, and scored when Saenz dropped a fly ball down the rightfield line.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the third when Saenz led off with single and later scored on a single to right by Jones. HBU struck for a pair in the bottom of the fourth, with senior first baseman

Zach Nehrir following with a single and both runner scoring on a two-run single by Martinez.
HBU added two more in the eighth as Martinez doubled down the leftfield line to lead off the frame, then Saenz drew a walk. Jones drove in both runs with another single to right.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
