Colter Lasher hit 7-of-10 from the field to lead the Huskies (1-1) with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Junior guard
Anthony Odunsi added 15 points, three assists and three steals, while senior guard
Marcel Smith had eight points. Freshman center
Josh Ibarra had a team-high 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, which tied for the most in a single game since HBU returned to Division I in 2007 with Mario Flaherty, who had six against South Dakota on Jan. 28, 2010.
Chris Hobgood and Phil Carey led Hillsdale (2-5) with 13 points each. Marqus Moody added seven points and led the Saints with seven rebounds.
HBU shot 51.5 percent for the game, but only 5-for-21 from behind the arc, and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line. Hillsdale shot 29.3 percent from the field, 4-for-20 from 3-point range, and 15-for-22 from the free-throw line. The Huskies outrebounded the Saints, 46-33, and outscored them 48-16, in the paint.
HBU scored the first eight points of the game on baskets by four separate players, but Hillsdale scored back-to-back buckets to cut the Huskies' lead in half. Senior center
Ricmonds Vilde responded with a three-point play, then he blocked a shot on the other end that wound up as a breakaway dunk for sophomore guard
Reveal Chukwujekwu. Odunsi buried a three to extend HBU's lead to 16-4.
Leading 19-9, the Huskies went on an 11-4 run to extend their lead to 30-13 with just under eight minutes to go. The Saints were within 18, but five-straight points by Lasher sparked a 12-0 run to give the Huskies a 46-18 lead with 2:51 on the clock and HBU took a 52-23 lead into halftime.
HBU shot 58.8 percent from the field, including 3-for-12 from 3-point range, while Hillsdale shot 24.2 percent and 1-for-10 from long range. The Huskies went 9-for-11 and the Saints were 6-for-8 from the free throw stripe.
Odunsi stole the inbounds pass to start the second half and took it the distance for a layup, but Randall Henderson hit a jumper and a pair of free throws for Hillsdale. Smith threw an alley-oop to sophomore guard
Caleb Crayton for a jam, Crayton made a steal and threw it ahead to Smith for a layup, then Smith came up with a steal and Crayton laid it in on the other end to put HBU ahead, 66-31, with 14:12 left.
HBU led 79-47 with 6:37 to go, then held Hillsdale scoreless for four-and-a-half minutes as the Huskies went up by 39 with just over two minutes on the clock. Abram Cobb and Ryan Hickerson each hit late threes for the Saints as the Huskies settled for a 36-point margin.
The Huskies return to action when they travel to face UT Arlington Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at College Park Center in Arlington.
