Central Arkansas Pulls Away From Men's Basketball

Sophomore forward Caleb Crayton leads Huskies with season-high 20 points.



CONWAY, Ark. – Central Arkansas used a 14-2 run just before halftime to break open a close game and go on to an 86-69 victory over HBU in Southland Conference basketball Saturday night at the Farris Center.
 
Sophomore forward Caleb Crayton scored a season-high 20 points and tied his season high by pulling down eight rebounds for the Huskies (3-11, 0-2 SLC). Sophomore forward Cody Joyce tied his career high with 14 points, before being ejected following a pair of technical fouls with 7:13 left. Junior guard Marcel Smith had a season-high six assists for HBU.
 
LaQuentin Miles led four Bears (4-9, 1-1) in double figures with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. Tirrell Brown posted a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while DeShone McClure had 19 points and Jalen Jackson had 10.
 
UCA shot 51 percent from the field for the game, 5-of-16 from 3-point range, and 15-for-28 from the foul line, while HBU shot 39 percent from the field, 3-of-16 from long range, and 18-for-26 from the free throw line. The Huskies outrebounded the Bears, 43-38.
 
Crayton buried a three to tie the game, 9-9, with 16:30 to go, and after UCA regained the lead, freshman forward Colter Lasher made a trey to tie it, 15-15, at the 12:34 mark. The Bears led 23-17 after a layup by Jackson, but freshman guard Jimmy Barton and freshman forward Alex Fountain each made a pair of free throws to get the Huskies within two. McClure hit his second three of the half to put UCA back up by five, but Joyce answered with a short jump hook and Crayton made one-of-two from the line to make it a two-point game.
 
Tirrell Brown made a pair of technical free throws, then Miles took an alley-oop on an inbounds pass for a dunk to make the Bears' lead 34-28, but Smith made two free throws, and Crayton got a tip in two cut the Huskies' deficit to two at the 4:00 mark. UCA ended the half on a 14-2 run, capped by Lenell Brown's 3-pointer just before the buzzer to take a 48-34 lead into halftime.
 
UCA shot 53 percent, including 3-for-8 from 3-point range, and went 7-for-10 from the free throw line in the first half, while HBU shot 34 percent, 2-for-9 from long range, and 10-for-12 from the stripe. The Bears outrebounded the Huskies, 21-18. Crayton led HBU with 10 points at the break, while Miles had 13, McClure had 12 and Tirrell Brown had 11 points for the Bears.
 
The Bears extended their lead to 16 early in the first half, but Vilde made two free throws and Crayton made a steal and took it the distance to make the score 52-40 with 18:04 left. A Womack layup made it an 11-point game, but McClure and Lenell Brown hit back-to-back threes for the Bears.
 
Chasen Williamson and Miles each converted three-point plays that made the score 70-50 with 8:55 left. Crayton drove in for a double-pump layup, then sophomore guard Rob Lewis buried a three, but Joyce drew back-to-back technical fouls, and Williamson made three of the four free throws. The Bears' largest lead of the game was 24, before settling for the 17-point margin.
 
The Huskies return to action and return home to host Stephen F. Austin Thursday and Northwestern State Saturday in Southland Conference action, with both games tipping at 7:30 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
