THIBODAUX, La. – Fresh off their first Southland Conference victory, the HBU women's basketball team will look to ride the momentum this weekend, when the Huskies travel to Louisiana to play Nicholls and McNeese State.
Thursday's game against Nicholls, which will be the first-ever on the hardwood between the two schools, will tip off at 5:30 pm. Saturday's game against McNeese State will begin at 1 pm. Along with listening live to the Legacy Sports Network broadcast for both contests, the game against McNeese will also be live on ESPN3. The Cowgirls lead the all-time series, 2-0, as the teams haven't met since the 2009-10 season.
HBU (5-10 overall, 1-3 SLC) defeated visiting Northwestern State, 67-56, Jan. 11, in its last game.
Two days after
Shanice Steenholdt was held to just six points against SFA, she exploded for game highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds against NSU for her seventh double-double of the season. She shot 50 percent from the floor and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Her lone 3-pointer helped turn a one-point HBU deficit into a four-point halftime lead.
Monet Neal had a solid weekend, as she finished with 13 points against NSU and an average of 12.0 in the two games.
Steenholdt leads the Huskies with 17.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
Erin McGarrachan follows with 10.5 points per game, followed by
Rachel Arthur with 10.1.
Nicholls (7-8 overall, 2-2 SLC) dropped two road games to Lamar and Sam Houston State. SHSU's Jasmine Johnson hit a buzzer-beating three to give the Bearkats a 51-50 win over the Colonels.
Emani White led Nicholls with 11 points against SHSU, while Jenny Nash had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
White leads the Southland Conference with 18.5 points per game. Nash follows White on the team with 10.5 points per contest. Marina Lilly has pulled down a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game.
McNeese State (9-6 overall, 2-2 SLC) split at home last weekend. The Cowgirls defeated Sam Houston State, 59-55, Jan. 9, but lost to Lamar, 72-58, two days later.
Jayln Johnson led four Cowgirls in double figures against the Cardinals, with 17 points, while NeTanya Jones posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Allison Bagett leads the Cowgirls with 18.2 points per game, followed by Cecilia Okoye with 11.4. Okoye has pulled down a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game.
