HOUSTON -- Running at or near the front of the 170+-man field for the entire race, Matt Perri finished second Friday at the Rice Invitational cross country meet to lead HBU's men to an eighth-place team finish ahead of TCU, Texas State and Sam Houston State.

Perri clocked 16:48 over the rugged 5,500-meter course on the Rice campus, and was only four seconds behind last year's Southland Conference runner-up, Alex Bruce-Littlewood of McNeese State. Freshman Juan Fraga had another strong showing, finishing 39th at 17:48, with fellow freshman Orlando Garcia in 80th at 18:33. Newcomer Oscar Garcia was 89th at 18:41, and Javier Zamora placed 103rd to round out the HBU scorers. The Huskies tallied 236 points as hosts Rice won the team title with 77.

Jessica Whitt was the top HBU finisher in the 4,220-meter women's race, taking 38th in the 140+-woman field with a time of 16:09. Gabriela Busquet was 47th at 16:21, and Carolyn McClanahan took 77th at 17:17. Jamie Whitt (83rd/17:33) and freshman Stephanie Aguilar (95th/17:58) claimed the other scoring spots for the Huskies, who totaled 267 points to beat TCU and Southland foe Nicholls State. Texas A&M won the team title with 29 points.

The Huskies travel to Round Rock in two weeks for the Texas Invitational.
