HOUSTON – Houston Baptist scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but left the tying run on second as Northern Colorado salvaged the Great West Conference series finale, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior second baseman
Josh Foust went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for the Huskies (20-20-1, 8-7 GWC). Junior rightfielder
Jordan McCoy went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored twice. Senior leftfielder
Luke Clements and sophomore catcher
Samm Wiggins each had a double.
Colby Harrison went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Jensen Park went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Bears (19-19, 10-5). Ryan Yamane wnet 1-for-4, drove in two runs and scored one. Nick Miller was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Landon Moseley singled and scored three times.
Sophomore
Ross Kennell (4-4) took the loss for HBU, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Kevin Willman (3-2) earned the win for Northern Colorado, allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings in relief of Miller, who gave up two runs on one hit and issued three walks in two innings. Jake Johnson earned his first save of the season, but allowed one run on two hits in one inning.
The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Miller walked the bases loaded, then Foust singled off Miller's arm. Junior catcher
Jordan Hebert added a sacrifice fly.
The Bears got on the board with five runs in the top of the fourth. Yamane had a two-run single, and Miller, Harrison and Coffman had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to put Northern Colorado ahead, 5-2.
Moseley singled and scored on Park's RBI single in the sixth to extend Northern Colorado's lead to 6-2.
Clements walked, went to second on a balk and scored on McCoy's single to center as the Huskies cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Bears got the run back in the seventh when Moseley and Yamane drew two-out walks and Park delivered an RBI single to left for a 7-3 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Packard gave up a single to senior centerfielder
Jake Gonzalez and walked McCoy. Johnson came in and got junior designated hitter
Mike Chamberlain to fly out to right, advancing Gonzalez to third. Gonzalez scored on a balk, then Foust reached on an infield single and the throw skipped past first, allowing McCoy to score. Wiggins pinch hit for Hebert and smashed a double down the rightfield line to make the score 7-6, but junior shortstop
CJ Jarvis struck out to end the game.
HBU returns to action when they travel to face Texas State in its final regular season road game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in San Marcos, Texas.
