Box Score

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist sophomore righthander Tyler Hoelscher went the distance to lead the Huskies to a 3-2 victory over Northern Colorado in Great West Conference play Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

Hoelscher (5-4), given the nickname “Screech” by his teammates as a freshman for his likeness to the Saved By the Bell character, held the Bears to two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Junior first baseman Mike Chamberlain went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs for the Huskies (20-19-1, 8-6 GWC). Junior shortstop CJ Jarvis went 1-for-2, drove in a run and scored one, while senior leftfielder Luke Clements doubled and drove in a run.

Colby Harrison went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run, while Nick Miller had the only extra-base hit for Northern Colorado (18-19, 9-5) and a double.

Chris Hammer (3-4) took the loss for the Bears, allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

HBU got on the board first as Jarvis led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on Clements' double down the leftfield line. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second as Chamberlain led off with a wal and scored on Jarvis' RBI single to right.

Miller led off the top of the fourth with a double for the Bears, then scored a single by Harrison. Coffman reached on a fielder's choice and Harrison was safe at second and went to third on an error. Joe Love grounded to short, but HBU couldn't turn the double play as Harrison scored to tie the game, 2-2.

The Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning when Chamberlain led off with a single and advanced on sophomore catcher Samm Wiggins' sacrifice bunt. Sophomore designated hitter Josh Martinez singled through the right side to bring home the go-ahead run and eventual winning tally.

The second game of the doubleheader was washed out, so the series will conclude with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
