HOUSTON – Houston Baptist received a command performance from junior righthander
Ryan Lower and broke the game open with a four-run fifth as the Huskies took the Great West Conference series opener from Northern Colorado, 8-2, Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
Lower (4-4) allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked two in seven innings. Freshmen
Matt Harding and
Dylan Zarosky worked an inning each in relief, with Harding allowing the other run.
Junior first baseman
Mike Chamberlain went 1-for-3, drove in two and scored three times for the Huskies (19-19-1, 7-6 GWC), while sophomore designated hitter
Josh Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double and two rBIs. Senior second baseman
Josh Foust went 2-for-2 with a triple, walked twice and drove in a pair. Senior leftfielder
Luke Clements went 2-for-4 and scored a run, junior rightfielder
Jordan McCoy singled and scored twice, and junior shortstop
CJ Jarvis tripled and scored.
Josh Tinnon (4-2) took the loss for Northern Colorado (18-18, 9-4), allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and walked four in four innings.
Jensen Park went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Colby Harrison went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for the Bears. Nick Miller and Andrew Coffman each had doubles, while Landon Moseley had a triple.
The Huskies struck early as Jarvis led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on sophomore third baseman
Curtis Jones' infield single. The Bears tied the game in the top of the second when Harrison singled up the middle and scored on Coffman's RBI double.
HBU regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as Chamberlain reach on an error to lead off, then scored on Martinez's double.
Clements led off the fifth with a single, senior centerfielder
Jake Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and McCoy walked to load the bases with no outs. Chamberlain delivered a two-run double to left, Martinez added an RBI single and McCoy scored on an error. More damage was avoided as Jarvis lined into a triple play to end the inning.
The Huskies tacked on two more in the seventh on Foust's two-run triple to make the score 8-1. Park singled and scored on an RBI base hit by Harrison in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, followed by the single-game finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
