Baseball Hammers Prairie View A&M, 14-4

Sophomore Curtis Jones earned his second win of the season and added a pair of hits and scored three runs against Prairie View A&M Tuesday.

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist got off to a hot start with a four-run first inning, then finished off Prairie View A&M with a five-run eighth as the Huskies run-ruled the Panthers, 14-4, Tuesday afternoon at Panther Field.
 
Junior rightfielder Jordan McCoy went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and scored twice, while junior catcher Jordan Hebert went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and also drove in four for the Huskies (18-19-1). Senior centerfielder Luke Clements went 3-for-4 with a double, scored three times and drove in a run, while sophomore third baseman Josh Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a pair of runs. Senior second baseman Josh Foust recorded a pair of singles, and freshman leftfielder Nathan Schwertner had his first career hit, a double, drove in a run and scored twice.
 
Sophomore righthander Curtis Jones (2-0) picked up the win for HBU, allowing three runs, only one earned, on five hits, in six innings and also went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored three runs.
 
Greg Salcido went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, drove in a run and scored for the Panthers (19-18), and Walter Wells was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
 
Edward Robledo (3-2) took the loss for Prairie View A&M, allowing four runs on four hits in only 1/3 of an inning. Chadd Flick gave up four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, and Grant Dougherty was touched for five runs, two earned, on three hits in one inning.
 
The first four Huskies reached bases as junior shortstop CJ Jarvis led off the game with a walk, then Jones and Clements had back-to-back singles to plate the first run. McCoy walked to load the bases, then junior first baseman Bradley Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Martinez and Foust followed with RBI singles to give HBU a 4-0 lead.
 
The Panthers got on the board in the second as Salcido led off with a double and scored on Wells' RBI single, but the Huskies answered with a pair in the top of the third. Martinez singled with one out and stole second. After Foust grounded out for the second out, Schwertner and Hebert ripped back-to-back RBI doubles as HBU went ahead, 6-1.
 
Prairie View A&M scored in the bottom of the third on Brad Benes' RBI fielder's choice, but HBU once again came back with two runs in the fourth. Jones and Clements led of with singles, then McCoy brought them home with a two-run double to stake the Huskies to an 8-2 lead.
 
Wells singled and scored in the fourth when Christian Krushall reached on an error to cut the Huskies' advantage to 8-3.
 
Both team scored single runs in the seventh, as Schwertner was hit by a pitch and scored on Hebert's second double of the game for HBU. Colby Hines walked and scored on a Salcido double for Prairie View A&M to make the score 9-4.
 
In the eighth, McCoy added a two-run triple and Brown had another sacrifice fly. After Foust singled and Schwertner walked, Hebert delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring and put the Huskies up by 10.
 
HBU returns to action when it hosts Northern Colorado in a four-game Great West Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. The series begins with a single game Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader at noon and a single game Sunday at 2 p.m.
