NATCHITOCHES, La. – Houston Baptist lost two critical games to the second-place team in the conference, Northwestern State, Saturday afternoon from Lady Demon Diamond. Northwestern State defeated the Huskies 2-0 and 4-0.
Mac Christensen and
Kirsten Schwirtlich each had two-hit days for the Huskies. Christensen had both of her hits in the first game, while K. Schwirtlich had one hit in each contest.
Northwestern State scored both of its runs in the second inning in game one, as Cheyenne DelaGarza hit a one-out, two-run home run to center field.
The Huskies had several opportunities to tie the game, but the biggest opportunity came in the top of the seventh.
Shay Orsak led off the inning reaching first on a Lady Demon error, then advanced to third on a double by Christensen, as the Huskies had the tying run in scoring position and nobody out. But Kylie Roos got two groundouts and a strike out to end the threat and the game.
Christensen went 2-for-3 for HBU, while K. Schwirtlich,
Melissa Herman, and
Holly Webb each had a hit.
Sarah Shotton (3-7) went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits, two runs, and two walks. She struck out seven, which tied a season high.
Burke went 2-for-3 for Northwestern State, while DelaGarza had both RBI. Roos (12-2) also went the distance, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
There was no score in game two until the Lady Demons scored a single run in the bottom of the third, as Brianna Rodriguez hit an RBI single. The Lady Demons increased their lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by Burke.
Northwestern State doubled up its lead to 4-0 an inning later, as Brittany Virgoe hit a two-run double to right field.
The Huskies were held to just two hits, as they went down in order four times in game two.
Rebecca Rademacher went 1-for-3, while K. Schwirtlich went 1-for-2.
Keely Shuler (5-6) started the game in the circle and allowed 12 hits and four runs in 5.1 innings.
Kendall Stiefel pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and gave up one walk.
Burke led the Lady Demons with three hits, while Tara McKenney, Virgoe, Rodriguez, and Jordan Palmer each had two hits.
Brooke Boening started in the circle and only pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and one walk. Kaylee Guidry (10-3) pitched the final 6.2 innings and allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out six.
