HOUSTON – Houston Baptist lost twice against visiting UTSA, 10-4 and 4-2, in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon from Husky Field.
HBU (5-5) was led at the plate by
Kirsten Schwirtlich and
Melissa Herman. Schwirtlich went a combined 2-for-5 at the plate, with two RBI coming in game one. She also went yard in the opener. Herman went a combined 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI coming in game two.
Siera Sproul led UTSA (13-8) with six RBI in the two games.
In game one, UTSA scored at least two runs in the first four innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before HBU cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Herman started the bottom of the frame with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a double by
Daniella Rodarte. The very next batter,
Victoria Granchelli, doubled home Rodarte, to make the score 4-2 UTSA.
The Roadrunners answered with a three-run third to lead the Huskies, 7-2. The Huskies continued to battle, scoring twice in the bottom of the third on a two-run shot by K. Schwirtlich to trail UTSA, 7-4.
UTSA would add two more runs in the top of the fourth and another in the top of the sixth for a 10-4 lead. HBU went down in order in two of the final three innings.
Herman led HBU with two hits, while K. Schwirtlich had a team-high two RBI.
Kendall Stiefel started the game and took the loss, allowing three hits, four runs (two earned), and three walks while striking out two in 2.0 innings.
Keely Shuler pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed seven hits, six runs (five earned), while whiffing two.
Sproul went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored for the Roadrunners. Haylee Staton went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits, four earned runs, and one walk while striking out five.
Game two started similar to game one, as UTSA jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one, both runs unearned. Neither team could score until the top of the fifth, when the Roadrunners added a single run in the fifth and sixth for a 4-0 lead. The fourth run came on a solo shot by Sproul to center field.
The Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to two. The Huskies had runners at second and third with just one out for Herman, who hit a sac fly to center to score the Huskies' first run. Rodarte then singled to left, scoring
Lauren Powers.
The Huskies had a golden opportunity to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh, with bases loaded and nobody out. But the Roadrunners got a pop-up at short stop, who then doubled up the runner at third for two quick outs and runners at first and second. A groundout on the ensuing batter ended the game.
Six different Huskies had a hit, as Herman and Rodarte had the lone RBI.
Lori Earl went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned), with four strikeouts.
Alyssa Vordenbaum earned the win for the Roadrunners. Vordenbaum, who had a perfect game going until the bottom of the fourth, gave up five hits, two earned runs, and a walk while striking out three. Staton relieved Vordenbaum in the bottom of the seventh and earned her second save, allowing one hit and one walk.
HBU will play its first Southland Conference games at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10.
