HOUSTON – Reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, Victoria Granchelli hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, as HBU defeated UH-Victoria, 7-6, in game two to split the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon from Husky Field. The Jaguars took game one, 9-6.

Lauren Schwirtlich led HBU (12-11), going 6-for-8 with four runs scored. She now has a 12-game hitting streak. Kirsten Schwirtlich went 3-for-7, including a 3-for-5 effort in game two, where she had four RBI and three runs scored.

HBU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one, with a two-run second and fourth. The Jaguars responded with a three-run fifth – thanks to a three-run homer by Moehrig – and a five-run sixth, highlighted by a grand slam by Alex Holland.

HBU had its opportunities in the seventh inning, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs and runners at first and second, but the Jaguars got a lineout to second to end the game.

L. Schwirtlich and Kate Maddock each led HBU with three hits. Maddock hit a homer to dead center field in the fourth. Keely Shuler (4-4) took the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits, nine runs (one earned), and two walks while striking out two in 5.1 innings. Sarah Shotton pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up a walk while striking out two.

The combination of Moehrig and Holland combined to go 5-for-7 with eight RBI and three runs scored for the Jaguars. Holland (4-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits, six runs (five earned), and three walks while striking out three.

HBU jumped out to another quick lead in game two, leading the Jaguars 4-0 through three innings. But the offense sputtered and UH-Victoria battled back, tying the game at four-all with a four-run sixth inning.

UH-Victoria scored twice in the top of the ninth, with a two-run shot by Moehrig – her second of the game. But the Huskies battled back, tying the game in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI single down the right field line by K. Schwirtlich. With runners at second and third and two outs, V. Granchelli brought home K. Schwirtlich, as the center fielder lost the ball in the sun.

K. Schwirtlich had a huge game for the Huskies, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored, and a homer. Kendall Stiefel (4-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits, six runs, and three walks while striking out six.

The Huskies will be happy to see Moehrig leave town, as she had another huge game for the Jaguars. She went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored, and two home runs.
