Kirsten Schwirtlich went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and Houston Baptist head coach
Mary-Ellen Hall earned her 700th career win as the Huskies defeated Southeastern Louisiana 10-2 in six innings Sunday afternoon from Husky Field.
“We showed great resilience coming back from yesterday's games,” said Hall. “We're really proud of how the girls played.”
SLU took the series 2-1, as the Lady Lions won both games Saturday.
Schwirtlich led all players in hits and RBI for HBU (9-9, 3-3 SLC).
Lauren Schwirtlich went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Kate Maddock went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Daniella Rodarte and
Mac Christensen also had two-hit days.
Kendall Stiefel (2-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
Six different Lady Lions (14-8, 4-2 SLC) had a hit. Michelle Duhe and Kelsey Nicholls each recorded an RBI.
Starter Taylor Bishop (2-5) took the loss in the circle, lasting 1.1 innings and allowing two hits, four earned runs and two walks. Kenna Terry relieved Bishop and allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out one in 2.2 innings. Rachael Hellyer relieved Terry and allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), and one walk while whiffing one in 1.1 innings.
SLU took a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the second, where HBU erupted for three second-inning runs to take a 4-2 lead. With two runners on, Maddock reached base on a fielder's choice, as the Lady Lions tried to get the runner heading home, but Christensen slid under the tag safely. A single by
Lauren Powers loaded the bases with one out, as SLU went to Terry. The first hitter for Terry, K. Schwirtlich, hit a two-run single.
There was no scoring in the third and then HBU put another three-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Two straight singles followed by a sac bunt by Powers put runners at second and third with one out. K. Schwirtlich hit an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw, putting runners at second and third. Herman singled home L. Schwirtlich. Rodarte then singled up the middle, scoring K. Schwirtlich to make the score 7-2.
An RBI single by K. Schwirtlich in the bottom of the fifth that brought home Maddock made the score 8-2.
The Huskies put a two-spot in the bottom of the sixth to put the run-rule into effect. Back-to-back one-out singles by Christensen and
Holly Webb put runners at first and second.
Callie Herrington pinch-ran for Webb. Maddock reached on a fielder's choice, as Christensen crossed home safely. Herrington advanced to third on a throwing error. L. Schwirtlich doubled to right-center field, bringing home Herrington.
HBU will continue Southland Conference play hosting Central Arkansas for a three-game set beginning Tuesday, March 19 at 2 pm.
