HOUSTON – Houston Baptist was swept in a doubleheader in Southland Conference play, as visiting Southeastern Louisiana won game one, 14-2 in five innings, and game two, 4-3.
Melissa Herman led HBU (8-9, 2-3 SLC) by going 4-for-7 at the plate, including a perfect 3-for-3 effort in game one. Michelle Duhe led Southeastern Louisiana (16-7, 4-1 SLC) with a 6-for-7 performance in the doubleheader.
It was all SLU in game one, as the Lady Lions scored two runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth, and four in the fifth.
After falling behind 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first, the Huskies tied the game, as
Lauren Schwirtlich started the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Rebecca Rademacher, then
Kirsten Schwirtlich walked to put runners at first and second.
Melissa Herman hit a two-run double to left center to tie the game at two.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the second, the Huskies had a chance to tie the game, with a runner at third and just one out, but Lady Lion starter Kenna Terry got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. SLU then scored 11 straight runs to put the game out of reach.
Herman led HBU by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Sarah Shotton (2-3) started in the circle and took the loss, allowing five hits, six runs (five earned), and three walks while striking out two in 2.1 innings.
Lori Earl relieved Shotton and allowed four hits, five runs (one earned), and one walk while whiffing one in 1.2 innings.
Kendall Stiefel pitched the final inning and gave up three hits and two runs (one earned).
Duhe also went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for SLU. Kelsey Nicholls went 2-for-2 with five RBI. Terry (4-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out five.
In game two, HBU took its first lead of the afternoon with a single run in the bottom of the second, as
Mac Christensen had an RBI single.
The Huskies went up 2-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Daniella Rodarte started the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then crossed home on a sac fly by Christensen.
SLU cut the deficit to 2-1 as Amber Sather hit a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth.
HBU went back up by two in the bottom of the sixth, as Herman hit an RBI double to center.
SLU kept battling in the top of the seventh, as the Lady Lions got a one-out triple by Duhe, followed by an infield single by Katie Lacour, placing runners on the corners and one out for Sathers. Sathers hit a three-run bomb to left field to give SLU a 4-3 lead.
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as the Huskies had runners at second and third with just one out. But SLU got a lineout followed by a strikeout to end the game.
Christensen led HBU with a 2-for-2 performance and two RBI.
Keely Shuler (3-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing nine hits, four earned runs, and one walk.
The top three hitters for SLU caused much headache for the Huskies, as the trio of Duhe, Lacour, and Sathers combined to go 8-for-10 with four RBI and four runs scored. Rachael Hellyer (7-0) earned the win in the circle, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, and one walk while striking out four.
HBU and SLU will conclude the weekend series with game three Sunday at 2 pm.
