Texas put a two-spot in the bottom of the first. Hoagland started the game with a single to left. After stealing second, Hoagland scored on a throwing error. Washington, who singled and had advanced to second on the throwing error, stole third, then scored on an illegal pitch. Both of the runs were unearned.
Webb had the Huskies' first hit of the day, with a two-out rope down the left-field line. Third baseman Hoagland stopped the ball from going down the line, but Webb reached safely to first for HBU's first hit of the afternoon.
After a scoreless top of the second, L. Schwirtlich had the Huskies' second hit of the afternoon, as she hit a slow grounder to third and beat the throw.
Hoagland put the Longhorns ahead 3-0 after a towering home run to left-center field. Washington followed that with a blooper into left field and the Huskies made a pitching change, Shotton for Shuler, with one out and a 3-0 deficit. After Washington stole second, Bruins brought her home, as her scorching roper ricocheted off of Webb's glove and into left field, making it 4-0. Shotton struck out Taylor Thom to end the inning.
M. Granchelli had the Huskies' third hit with a two-out knock in the top of the fourth, but the Longhorns ended the threat with a pop-up to end the inning.
The Longhorns had runners on the corners with two outs with Hoagland at the plate. A wild pitch brought home the fifth run of the game and the runner on first, Marlee Gabaldon, reached second and tried to stretch it to a two-bag advance, but was out, 2-5, for the third out.
HBU had a great opportunity to get a run across, as L. Schwirtlich started the inning with a single up the middle. But a flyout to left followed by a line drive double play ended the threat, as Texas led HBU in the middle of the sixth inning, 5-0.
After the third 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth for Texas, the Huskies went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game, 5-0.
HBU (4-1) hosts UH-Victoria on Sat., Feb. 23 at 1 pm in a doubleheader. It is the Huskies' home opener.
