HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist softball team concludes its season-opening five-game road trip with a trip to Austin and the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns. First pitch is set for a 4:30 pm start on Wed., Feb. 20 and will be shown live on the Longhorn Network.

The meeting will mark the first-ever between the Huskies and Longhorns.

HBU (4-0) won the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic, outscoring its opponents 38-5 in the process. The Huskies defeated Southern 8-0 (5) and 16-1 (5), Alcorn State 9-0 (5), and Louisiana Tech 5-4. The 4-0 start is the best for the Huskies since the 2007 squad started the season 6-0.

The Schwirtlich sisters started their Husky careers red-hot, combining to go 13-for-21 at the plate (.619). Kirsten Schwirtlich leads the Huskies with seven hits, two doubles, three home runs, and 13 RBI. She set a new program record with eight RBI in the Huskies' 16-1 win over Southern on Feb. 17, hitting a grand slam in the second inning and following that with a three-run shot in the third. Lauren Schwirtlich leads the team with two triples and is second with six hits.

All four pitchers went 1-0 last weekend, with Lori Earl and Keely Shuler with perfect 0.00 ERAs. Shuler struck out eight batters against Alcorn State, which tied her career high. Sarah Shotton has a 1.00 ERA, and Kendall Stiefel has a 1.40 ERA.

#6 Texas (11-0) went 5-0 at the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational last weekend, hosted by the Univ. of Houston. The Longhorns had four shutouts and defeated Illinois 12-2. Eight of the 11 wins for Texas have come from shutouts.

Stephanie Ceo leads Texas with a .591 batting average. Brejae Washington leads the team with 14 hits and is second with a .438 average. Taylor Thom is tops with four doubles, four home runs, and is tied for the team lead with 15 RBI.

In the circle, Kim Bruin is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, striking out 11 and walking two. Holly Kern has a 0.39 ERA, followed by Blair Luna with 0.78, and Gabby Smith with 1.27. Luna has 53 of the team's 78 strikeouts.
