LAKE CHARLES, La. – Houston Baptist began the 2013 season with a five inning, 8-0 victory over Southern on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15, on the opening day of the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic.
Kirsten Schwirtlich went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate in her HBU (1-0) debut, with two RBI and a run scored.
Holly Webb went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Kate Maddock also had a two-RBI game, going 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Lauren Powers each had one RBI.
Lori Earl earned the victory in her HBU debut in the circle, allowing just two hits, while walking one and striking out one in five innings.
Alicia Barajas and Whitney King each had a hit for Southern (0-6). Carla Arismedi started in the circle for the Jags and took the loss, allowing seven hits, seven runs – six earned – and four walks while striking out one in 3.0 innings. Kendyl Stevenson pitched the final 2.0 innings and two hits, one earned run and one walk, while whiffing one.
HBU started off the game on fire, putting a five-spot on the Jags before Southern came up to bat. After an inning-opening out,
Daniella Rodarte and K. Schwirtlich each drew walks.
Melissa Herman then reached base following a Jag error, loading the bases for
Michaela Granchelli. Granchelli reached base on a fielder's choice, as Rodarte was out at home. Still with the bases loaded, Maddock singled, scoring two runners, followed by another two-RBI double by Webb. The very next batter, Christensen, doubled, bringing home Webb and making the score 5-0, all five runs coming with two outs.
Earl had a perfect game going through two innings, until King singled up the middle to start the third.
HBU scored two more runs in the top of the fourth, as K. Schwirtlich had a two-RBI double, scoring Rodarte and
Rebecca Rademacher.
The Huskies' eighth run came in the fifth inning, as Powers drew a bases-loaded walk. Earl got two pop-ups and a groundout to end the bottom of the fifth and the game.
HBU will continue the Cowgirl Classic against Alcorn State at 12 pm and Louisiana Tech at 5 pm.
