WACO -- Matt Perri ran his best race as a Husky and turned in the highest placing ever by an HBU runner at the NCAA South Central Regional cross country meet Friday at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course, clocking 30:47.2 over the undulating 10,000-meter course to finish 15th.

Perri was the fifth individual finisher not on an automatic-qualifying team, and will have to wait for the NCAA committee to determine whether he will receive an at-large bid to the national championship meet at Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23.

The Huskies finished 15th as a team with 417 points, only four behind Southland Conference rivals Sam Houston, and ahead of UTSA and LSU among others. SLC team champs Lamar finished third and could make it to the NCAA championships as an at-large pick, which would guarantee Perri a spot in Terre Haute.

Javier Zamora had his best race ever for the Huskies, placing 77th at 32:41.3, and freshmen Orlando Garcia (33:41.0) and Juan Fraga (33:41.2) were 108-109. Eladio Perez crossed the line at 33:56.2 to take 117th and round out the scoring for HBU. Ulysses Montoya (123rd/34:17.9) and Jeremy Lewis (132nd/34:51.6) were the other finishers for the Huskies.

Hiba Kreidie was 57th at 22:18.8 on the 6K women's course to lead her team to a 15th-place finish with 431 points, ahead of Houston and LSU. It was the best team finish in the three years HBU has been eligible for this meet.

Gabriela Busquet, who was the top HBU finisher at the SLC Championships two weeks ago, was 78th at 22:50.4, with Jessica Whitt in 93rd at 23:17.3. The other two scorers for the Huskies were freshman Stephanie Aguilar (109th/23:45.5) and Carolyn McClanahan (121st/24:25.3). Jamie Whitt (128th/24:52.3) and Kierstin Santana (130th/25:13.8) were the squad's sixth and seventh runners.
