HOUSTON – Houston Baptist held the nation's 69th-ranked leading scorer, Britni Martin, (17.1 ppg) to two first-half points, but the Huskies could not overcome Sam Houston State, as HBU fell to the Bearkats, 75-58, Wednesday evening at Sharp Gym.
Shanice Steenholdt led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds for HBU (3-12), also recording one assist, three blocks, and two steals.
Erin McGarrachan scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 4-of-6 from the line. She also grabbed eight boards.
Devyn Weymouth was tied for the game high with five assists.
Sequeena Thomas led SHSU (4-8) with 23 points and seven rebounds, as she was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Bearkats shot 22-of-24 from the line (92%). Martin was held to just two first-half points, thanks to a pair of free throws, but scored 10 points in the second half for a total of 12 points. Chanice Smith scored 15 points and Jasmine Johnson pitched in with 12.
After spotting the Bearkats an early 2-0 lead, HBU rattled off seven-straight points to take a 7-2 lead, prompting an SHSU timeout at the 16:41-mark.
Following a McGarrachan trey that gave the Huskies a 10-4 lead, the Bearkats battled back, trailing HBU by just one, 10-9, before
Tayler Jefferson nailed a three-pointer to give the Huskies a four-point lead, 13-9, with 12:30 remaining in the opening half.
Ashleigh Nwanguma scored on a layup to make the score 15-9 with 11:06 remaining, but SHSU scored eight-straight points to take a 17-15 lead with 8:33 left in the half.
With the score tied at 17-all, the Bearkats used a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game thus far, 28-19, with 4:00 remaining. Thomas scored seven of the nine points for SHSU.
HBU cut the deficit to five following a
Monet Neal layup, but SHSU closed out the first half outscoring HBU 6-0 to lead the Huskies at the break, 34-28.
Steenholdt led HBU at the break with eight points. Smith had 12 points for SHSU, while Thomas had 11.
HBU started the second half cold, being outscored by the Bearkats 9-0 in the first six-and-a-half minutes, as SHSU broke the game open leading by 14, 43-29.
After a timeout, HBU came back, using a 9-3 run to trail SHSU by eight, 46-38, culminated by a
Rachel Arthur trey.
But the ensuing media timeout would cool the momentum of the Huskies, as SHSU increased its lead to 12, 53-41, with 9:25 remaining.
HBU only had six baskets in the final 8:44, five of them coming from Steenholdt, as SHSU increased its lead by as many as 20.
HBU will conclude its home stand facing a first-ever opponent, Delaware State, on Sat., Jan. 5 at 7 pm.
