Volleyball Sweeps New Orleans on the Road

Junior middle blocker Caiti Wenger had 15 kills in Sunday's sweep of New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Houston Baptist hit .447 to coast to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-14) sweep of future Southland Conference foe New Orleans Sunday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
 
Junior middle blocker Caiti Wenger hit .650 with 15 kills on 20 attempts, while sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Casey had nine kills on 16 attempts and added 11 digs. Sophomore Bailey Keith had seven kills with no errors and led the Huskies (9-8) with four blocks. Senior setter Victoria Weatherly had 28 assists, while sophomore libero Esther Longoria tied for the team lead with 11 digs.
 
Brionne Smith had seven kills for New Orleans (3-9), while Laila Hansen had six kills. Lauren Levy led the Privateers with eight digs.
 
HBU held UNO to a .090 hitting percentage for the match. The Huskies outdug the Privateers, 34-28, and outblocked them, 7-2.
 
The first set was tied, 9-9, until the Huskies scored four-straight points, which included a pair of kills by Casey. HBU later scored five-straight points to go ahead, 19-13, then went on to take the set, 25-16. Casey had seven kills on seven attempts in the opening frame.
 
HBU scored the first eight points of the second set, then later scored four-straight points to lead 16-5. The Huskies scored the last three points of the set to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-9 decision. Wenger had eight kills on eight attempts in the set.
 
The Huskies led 5-4 in the third, but went on a seven-point run to extend their advantage to 12-4. HBU scored eight of nine points to get to match point at 24-13 and closed out the win, 25-14. Wenger led the Huskies with four kills in the set.
 
HBU returns to action when they begin Great West Conference play on the road against NJIT Thursday at 6 p.m. in Newark, N.J., followed by Chicago State Saturday at 2 p.m. in Chicago.
