LAKE CHARLES, La. – Houston Baptist spotted McNeese State an early 1-0 lead, then tied the match just before halftime, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Field.
"We played hard, just could not get the end result," said head coach
Misty Jones. "I was proud of the effort, but we have to do a better job of executing our game plan for the entirety of the game."
McNeese State wasted little time getting the lead, as Brennan Moss scored in the 5th minute. After being awarded a corner kick, McNeese State's Rebekah DeJonghe took the corner and Moss headed the ball into the back of the net.
HBU tied the match in the 41st minute, as
Taylor Gibson headed a pass sent by
Emily Hughes.
Both teams had their opportunities to take the lead in the second half.
Amina Radoncic's shot was stopped by Cowgirl keeper Katie Seeber in the 87th minute.
Shelby Horn earned the tie in goal for HBU, making seven saves in 110 minutes. She made three saves in overtime to preserve the tie.
Seeber made three saves for McNeese State. The Cowgirls outshot HBU, 17-11, in shots and 8-4 in shots on goal in the match.
"We will feed off of the positives and continue to push forward to make sure we are prepared for conference play," said Jones.
HBU (4-5-3) will host Texas Southern Friday night at 7 pm and Prairie View A&M Sunday at 1 pm.
