HOUSTON – Freshman post
Ashleigh Nwanguma set new career highs in both points and rebounds, as she was one of three Huskies to finish in double-figures, as Houston Baptist defeated visiting Huston-Tillotson 88-51 Saturday evening from Sharp Gym.
Nwanguma scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds off the bench for HBU (3-11), as she grabbed eight offensive boards alone. It was not a record-setting repeat performance for
Shanice Steenholdt, but she still led all players with 26 points and was second with 12 boards, joining Nwanguma with eight offensive rebounds.
Tayler Jefferson was the third Husky in double figures, as she ended up with 13 points.
Wiebke Bruns led all players with six assists.
Kendra Venzant led Huston-Tillotson (5-10) with 21 points, 13 of which came in the first half. She also led the Lady Rams with seven rebounds, while Erica Cray scored 11 points.
After spotting HTU an early 2-0 lead, HBU rattled off six-straight points – and 10 of the next 12 – to lead the Lady Rams 10-4 and force HTU to call a timeout at the 15:45-mark.
Following the timeout, Arial Callis nailed a three to cut the HBU lead to 10-7, but that was the closest the Lady Rams got for the next seven minutes, as HBU increased its lead to as many as nine, following a layup by Steenholdt.
With the score 21-12 with 9:28 left in the first half, HTU used an 11-3 run in a span of three minutes to cut the HBU lead to just one, 24-23, as the run was culminated by a trey by Cray.
A made free throw by Hilary Morris tied the game at 24-all with 5:11 remaining, but was quickly answered by a three-pointer by Jefferson to give the Huskies a 27-24 lead.
That trey started the Jefferson show, as she would hit two more threes in a span of 90 seconds to lift the Huskies to a 35-26 lead with 2:32 left in the opening half. A steal by Steenholdt on the ensuing Lady Ram possession led to a foul on Nwanguma and two made free throws. Venzant closed out the first half with two made free throws to make the score 38-28 HBU at the break.
Venzant led all players in the first half with 13 points in the first half, as she was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Jefferson led HBU with nine points, while Steenholdt had nine.
HBU started the second half outscoring the Lady Rams 23-9 to lead HTU 61-37 with 12:18 left in the second half.
HBU continued to pound the glass, both offensively and defensively, the remainder of the game, as HBU had 13 offensive boards and 21 defensive, leading to 18 second-chance points. The Huskies' 50 second-half points were a season-high, as were the 88 total points.
HBU will welcome future Southland Conference foe, Sam Houston State, to Sharp Gym on Wed., Jan. 2. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
