HOUSTON – Fresh off a 21-point win over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville in exhibition play last Thursday, Houston Baptist opens the 2012-13 regular season hosting South Alabama Friday night at 7 pm.

The meeting will mark the second all-time between the two teams and the first-ever in Houston. The Jaguars defeated the Huskies, 83-48, on Dec. 2, 2008 in Mobile.

HBU led 52-33 at halftime and never looked back in an 84-63 exhibition win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Nov. 1.

Both Shanice Steenholdt and Erin McGarrachan recorded double-doubles. Steenholdt scored a game-high 24 points and also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, while McGarrachan - in her first game in a Husky uniform after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules - scored 12 points and grabbed 12 boards.

Tayler Jefferson scored a career-high 19 points, while leading all players with four assists.

Ashley Perez came off the bench to score 10 points and grab eight rebounds for the Javelinas. HBU shot 52 percent from the floor while holding the Javelinas to 28 percent shooting.

The game Friday against South Alabama is the Huskies' first home opener since the 2009-10 campaign, when the Huskies hosted nationally-ranked Duke. HBU is looking for its first victory in a season opener since the Huskies defeated Huston-Tillotson, 84-65, on Nov. 15, 2008.
South Alabama also started the season on the right foot, defeating visiting West Florida, 75-33, in an exhibition game on Nov. 5.

Meghan Dunn came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points for the Jaguars. Camille Reynolds scored 10 points and Mary Nixon scored 14 while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Veronica Cherizol had three blocks, while Reynolds had three steals.

Jaymie Druding led West Florida with 10 points, while Raquel Miller tied Nixon with nine boards. South Alabama shot 37 percent from the floor while holding West Florida to 21 percent shooting.

Following the game against South Alabama, HBU hosts Schreiner University Monday night, Nov. 12, at 7 pm.
